Here’s why parents should call for a focus on reading.
The striking societal and economic inequities among young Americans are the predictable result of ineffective schooling and social promotion, not an inevitable effect of schoolhouse racism.
They cannot be fixed by schooling focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), but they can be fixed!
In New York City, for example, the same poor minority children who fail in the public schools enroll in charter schools and go to college.
These differences exist because the institution founded to provide all children with a good educational start, i.e., public education, is failing in its core teaching/learning mission.
Only one-third of third graders read on grade level, and poor children (white and minority) do much worse. SEE YOUR SCHOOL HERE.
The blame placed on racism and discrimination is overblown, misleading, and a distraction from the schooling changes that are needed.
If America is to reduce its inequities and socioeconomic divisions, its public schools must make educational excellence, not diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), their top priority.
The needed tools and resources are available, and some schools are using them successfully. The vast majority of schools, however, ignore or reject the demonstrably effective tools in favor of ones that conform to the pedagogical orthodoxy taught in the teacher preparation programs.
