Readiness to Graduate from High School is closely linked to 8th grade readiness for high school and readiness for the 8th grade is substantially predictable from reading and math skills at grade 4.

Reading is especially important because it is the key to everything else.  

According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress only 34% of 4th grade students are proficient in reading–it is a major bottleneck that stunts the educational progress of millions of students.  An estimated 70% of students who are below proficient by grade 3 are destined to drop out or complete high school unprepared for a job or further study.”
